M&M DreamWorks: Sailor Moon Crystal Spotlight: Act 12 Recap!

The end of Sailor Moon? While only temporary at the end of act 12... the timing was symbolic for the development of Sailor Moon Crystal.

After several not much more than acceptable episode it was high time for something special again. And special we got, an especially deep fall at least. The first arc of Sailor Moon Crystal is coming to an end and I was seldom so glad to seeing something connected to Sailor Moon end... but let's do this in order and I apologize in advance if this resembles more a rant than a review.

Technical Performance

I'll cut this short. We don't even want to talk about the animation. The Sailor Planet Attack is still as lame as before. Beryl's necklace is suddenly there again even after being destroyed already (really, have you not learnt ANYTHING from the Sailor V/Venus fuku-screw up?)... At least Venus' Love-Me-Chain now looks like an actual magical attack... which just shows the inconsistency. Even on the technical side one does not get the impression that the producers had ANY plan how things were supposed to look from the beginning. But let us rather (albeit just as grudgingly) get to the important aspects.

Characters

Where to begin? Ah yes, it might just be as simple as it is disappointing. Last time I already mentioned how Sailor Moon Crystal manages to expose the weakness of the series when it isn't centered around Usagi and Mamoru and how the other Senshi get pushed into the background. All that much greater were my expectations for Act 12... and all that much greater weighs my disappointment.

Venus has been robbed off one of the few moments where a Senshi other than Sailor Moon (or Saturn) can boost about defeating a boss character like Beryl. And yes, it was supposed to be Venus who made the final strike against Beryl and not Sailor Moon. Aside from that Venus also got abducted along with the sword but this obviously couldn't happen because of the confrontation with the Shitennou – more on that in a moment.

Instead of giving more substance to one of the problem areas of the manga – the other Senshi often disappearing into the background –, Sailor Moon Crystal manages to make this weakness even worse in a scarily brilliant way and robs Venus of two critical moments – one further in the confrontation with Endymion and Metallia which she couldn't participate because... well, you know why.

What I can say in advance about the Shitennou in the character area is simple. Nothing. The development, that obviously was intended to be there, isn't and the pathetic attempt to make the final scene dramatic thusly failed by at least a star system. Any kind of emotional attachment to the characters is missing because it did not and does not happen. The same goes for Beryl. Here, too, her past should have been explored more if something like sympathy was supposed to be generated. Like this, the flashback just felt tagged on.

Practical Performance

And all that for what purpose? I don't think I have to name it. It was the sad ending to the Shitennou side story. And with sad I do not mean emotional. Emotional would work differently. To make something emotional a certain amount of work, an emotional tension that needs to be developed has to be there. But to do that the time was missing and the second arc had be squished into Sailor Moon Crystal after all. The result was exactly what I had been fearing for many episodes by now. A short, missing any kind of impact, pathetic end of the Shitennou. This can be summed up very quickly (warning, it may get very sarcastic here):

Confrontation. Shitennou stomp Senshi into the ground. Senshi appeal to the Shitennou (because we couldn't for once have an actual BATTLE!!!). One Sailor Planet Attack (that still looked way better in the NINETIES!). Shitennou saved... and then. Oh yes, we can't have them survive so Metallia has to just off them in a single moment. The end (thank you!).

Was I supposed to be shocked? Was I supposed to sit crying in front of the screen? I don't think so, not even without prior knowledge. The only consequent thing about this end was the stability in which through a handful of horribly written extra scenes something like a side story was attempted to be build – and story is actual an insult to the term. In this regard the Shitennou actually got a worthy finish. One just as pointless and time/space-wasting as the execution to this point.

I seriously doubt that Naoko Takeuchi did have this in mind.

This pretty much describes everything but just for the sake of it, let me sum up what this episode all did different (and wrong): Sailor Moon gets to defeat Beryl and not Venus. Endymion only takes the sword and not Venus. The Senshi are not taking part in the battle with Endymion and Metallia because they are tied up with the useless confrontation with the Shitennou. Only at the end we are back where we are supposed to be.

For this at least some points can be given. The sword scene is perhaps the most important one of the arc, acting as the bridge between past and present. The scene at least was acceptably done and if I hadn't still been "shocked" by the death of the Shitennou – or its absolute senseless, Deus ex Machina-esque execution –, I might have been able to enjoy it more. Like this it was more like a drop in the (galactic) ocean.

The discrepancy between obviously present abilities (Mercury creates a Fourth Dimension just like that) and the lack of real battle scenes is also rather provoking. The final confrontation with the Shitennou might have been at least halfway passable if there actually had been a duel instead of... whatever THAT was. Yet even that was not meant to be and as such further stands in contradiction with just a few episodes ago as Senshi and Shitennou seemed to be mostly on the same level, only getting a similar outcome because of the hesitation on the Senshi's part. For a final fight scenario there are surprisingly few battles. In fact practically none. Even the "battle" with Beryl consisted of one charge, an attack from Mars and Venus and the final stab. Really... that's just pathetic. Happiness Charge Precure has recently proven in an impressive manner how you can still make good action scenes in magical girl anime, here the action is almost completely missing, however. And that for a final fight scenario.

I do not even want to talk about Beryl's hair attack that used up all possible worn out clichés.

Conclusion

There are several positive things about this episode... The arc is almost finished. The Shitennou are finally dead. The side story centered around them is finally over... it can only get better. I think. Thought so after the Serenity-episode. One would expect not much could be done wrong in the remaining two episodes – especially since the Shitennou are gone. But they were not responsible for the theft of Venus' accomplishment either.

Act 12 culminates everything Sailor Moon Crystal has done wrong since the beginning and at the very least stays true to itself in bringing it all to end just like that. There is not much hope left within me for the rest, only the belief that it can only get better in the next arc. I'd like to say Rest in Peace Shitennou... but for that Sailor Moon Crystal managed to destroy any sympathy I might have for you.

With this the final scene gains another aspect. An ironic, self-critical one which I doubt the producers are even aware of (for that they actually had to CARE). At last any hope of things getting better should have died with this episode. Sailor Moon's "suicide" marks a similar fate for Sailor Moon Crystal. Yet while Sailor Moon will revive stronger than ever, Sailor Moon Crystal might at best come back as a zombie.

Score: 2.5/5 (and I am rather lenient with that)

Das Ende von Sailor Moon? Wenn auch nur temporär zum Ende von Akt 12... das Timing war sinnbildlich für die Entwicklung von Sailor Moon Crystal.

(Da NSW offline ist, werde ich beide deutsche und englische Versionen vorerst hier posten.)

Nach mehreren nicht mehr als akzeptablen Episoden wurde es endlich mal wieder Zeit für etwas Besonderes. Und besonders wurde es, ein besonders tiefer Fall zumindest. Sailor Moon Crystals erster Arc nähert sich dem Ende und noch nie war ich so früh darüber im Zusammenhang mit Sailor Moon etwas enden zu sehen... aber der Reihe nach und ich entschuldige mich jetzt schon, wenn dies hier mehr einer Schimpftirade gleicht, denn einem Review.

Technische Umsetzung

Ich mach es kurz. Über die Animation wollen wir gar nicht erst reden. Die Sailor Planet Attack ist weiterhin so lahm wie zuvor. Beryls Halskette, die schon zerstört war, ist plötzlich wieder da (habt ihr aus dem Debakel mit der Sailor V/Venus-Uniform denn GAR NICHTS gelernt?)... Zumindest sieht Venus Love-Me-Chain jetzt auch wirklich wie eine magische Attacke aus... wenn dies auch nur noch mehr die Inkonsistenz hervorhebt. Auch auf technischer Seite hat man leider das Gefühl, dass die Macher sich vorher KEINEN Plan gemacht haben wie etwas von Anfang an auszusehen hat. Doch kommen wir lieber (oder auch nicht lieber) zu den wichtigen Aspekten.

Charaktere

Wo soll ich anfangen... Ach ja, es ist wahrscheinlich genauso einfach wie es enttäuschend ist. Bereits beim letzten Mal habe ich erwähnt wie sehr Sailor Moon Crystal die Schwächen der Serie offenbart, wenn es nicht um Usagi und Mamoru geht, und wie sehr die anderen Charaktere eher zu Begleiterscheinung werden. Umso mehr Hoffnungen hatte ich für Akt 12... und umso herber wiegt die Enttäuschung.

Venus wurde um einen der wenigen Momente gebracht, in denen eine Senshi außer Sailor Moon (oder Saturn) damit angeben konnte einen Bosscharakter wie Beryl erledigt zu haben. Und ja, es hätte Venus sein sollen, die den finalen Schlag gegen Beryl setzt und NICHT Sailor Moon. Darüber hinaus wurde auch Venus zusammen mit dem Schwert entführt aber dies konnte ja nicht gehen wegen der finalen Konfrontation mit den Shitennou – dazu aber gleich noch.

Anstatt einer der Problemstellen des Mangas – die oftmals in den Hintergrund tretenden anderen Senshi – mehr Substanz zu geben, schafft es Sailor Moon Crystal auf fast erschreckend brillante Weise diese Schwäche noch größer zu machen und raubt somit Venus gleich zwei entscheidende Momente – noch einen im Kampf mit Endymion und Metallia, an dem sie ja nicht teilnehmen konnte wegen... na, ihr wisst schon.

Was ich zumindest auf Charakterebene über die Shitennou sagen kann ist recht einfach. Gar nichts. Die Entwicklung, die offensichtlich angestrebt wurde war nie vorhanden, und der armselige Versuch die letzte Szene dramatisch werden zu lassen, verfehlt somit sein Ziel um zumindest ein Sternensystem. Es fehlt jegliche emotionale Bindung zu den Charakteren, da kein Aufbau stattfand und stattfindet. Das gilt genauso für Beryl. Auch hier hätte schon früher auf ihre Vergangenheit eingegangen werden sollen, wenn der Zuschauer so etwas wie Mitgefühl entwickeln sollte. So ist der Flashback am Ende nur ein weiteres gefühlsloses Anhängsel.

Praktische Umsetzung

Und all das wofür? Nun, ich denke ich brauche es kaum noch auszusprechen. Es war auch das traurige Ende der Shitennou-Nebenhandlung. Und mit traurig meine ich bei weitem nicht emotional. Denn emotional ist anders. Emotional erfordert einen gewissen Aufwand, eine emotionale Spannung, die entwickelt werden muss. Aber dafür fehlte ja die Zeit und es musste ja unbedingt noch der zweite Arc in Sailor Moon Crystal hineingezwängt werden. Die Konsequenz war letztlich exakt das, was ich schon seit mehreren Episoden befürchtet habe. Ein kurzes, einer an jeglicher Spannung und Wirkung fehlendes, armseliges Ende der Shitennou. Dies lässt sich sehr kurz zusammenfassen: (Vorsicht es wird jetzt sehr sarkastisch)

Konfrontation. Shitennou überwältigen Senshi. Senshi appellieren an die Shitennou. Eine Sailor Planet Attack (die immer noch entsetzlich lahm im Vergleich zu den NEUNZIGERN ist). Shitennou gerettet... und dann. Oh ja, sie dürfen ja nicht überleben also muss Metallia sie mal eben einmal so töten. Ende. (Danke dafür zumindest!)

Sollte ich davon geschockt sein? Sollte ich heulend vor dem Bildschirm sitzen? Nein, ich denke das wäre auch ohne Vorwissen nicht der Fall gewesen. Das einzige Konsequente an dem Ende war eben gerade die Beständigkeit in der versucht wurde in einer Handvoll horrende geschriebener Extraszenen so etwas wie eine Nebenhandlung aufzubauen – und Handlung ist hier echt eine Beleidigung des Begriffes. In diesem Sinne fanden die Shitennou tatsächlich einen konsequent würdigen Abschluss. Nämlich genauso sinnlos und platzverschwendet wie die ganze Exekution bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt.

Ich wage ernsthaft zu bezweifeln, dass Naoko Takeuchi das im Sinn hatte.

Eigentlich beschreibt dies schon alles Wesentliche aber um es nochmal ordentlich und kurz auf den Punkt zu bringen, was diese Episode alles anders (und falsch macht): Sailor Moon besiegt Beryl anstatt Venus. Endymion nimmt nur das Schwert und nicht Venus. Die Senshi sind nicht an der Konfrontation mit Endymion und Beryl beteiligt, weil es ja noch die nutzlose Konfrontation mit den Shitennou geben muss. Erst am Ende sind wir wieder da, wo wir sein sollten.

Hierfür zumindest können ein paar Punkte vergeben werden. Die Schwertszene ist vielleicht die wichtigste Szene des ganzen Arcs, steht sie doch als Bindeglied zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Die Szene ist auf jedem Fall sehr ordentlich und wenn ich nicht noch "geschockt" vom Tod der Shitennou – oder seiner absolut sinnfreien Deus ex Machina-Ausführung – gewesen wäre, hätte ich sie vielleicht mehr gewürdigt. So ist es nur ein Tropfen auf den heißen Stein.

Fast schon provozierend ist auch die Diskrepanz zwischen den offensichtlich vorhanden Fähigkeiten der Senshi (Merkur kreiert mal eben eine vierte Dimension) und den nichtexistenten Kampfszenen. Vielleicht wäre die finale Konfrontation mit den Shitennou halbwegs passabel gewesen, wenn wenigstens ein echtes Duell stattgefunden hätte, anstatt dem... wie auch immer man DAS bezeichnen will. Aber auch das war uns nicht gegönnt und steht arg im Widerspruch zu noch vor ein paar Episoden als Senshi und Shitennou ebenbürtig schienen und nur aufgrund des Zögerns der Senshi einen ähnlichen Verlauf nahm. Für ein Endkampf-Szenario finden erstaunlich wenig Kämpfe statt. Eigentlich nämlich fast gar keine. Selbst der "Kampf" mit Beryl bestand aus einem Ansturm sowie einer Attacke von Venus und Mars vor dem finalen Stich. Ganz ehrlich..... das ist einfach nur erbärmlich. Happiness Charge hat zuletzt eindrucksvoll bewiesen wie man doch noch gute Actionszenen in Magical Girls-Anime inszeniert, hier fehlt die Action einfach gänzlich und das wie gesagt für ein Endkampfszenario.

Und über Beryls Haarattacke, die so ziemlich alle abgegriffenen Klischees bedient möchte ich NICHT reden.

Fazit

Es gibt mehre positive Dinge...... Der Arc ist fast zu Ende. Die Shitennou sind endlich tot. Die Nebengeschichte um sie herum ist endlich vorbei... Es kann nur besser werden. Denke ich. Dachte ich schon nach der Serenity-Episode. Eigentlich sollte man meinen, dass in den letzten 2 Episoden nicht mehr viel falsch gemacht werden kann – gerade da die Shitennou ja nicht mehr da sind. Aber die waren auch nicht Schuld am Diebstahl von Venus' Leistung.

Akt 12 kulmuniert so ziemlich alles was Sailor Moon Crystal seit Beginn falsch gemacht hat und bleibt sich zumindest darin treu all dies genauso zu Ende zu bringen. Viele Hoffnungen für den Rest habe ich nicht mehr, es bleibt nur der Glauben, dass es im nächsten Arc besser wird. Gerne würde ich sagen: Ruhet in Frieden, Shitennou... aber dafür hat mir Sailor Moon Crystal jede Sympathie für euch verdorben.

Somit bekommt die letzte Szene tatsächlich eine weitere Komponente, nämlich eine ironisch-selbstkritische, die aber wohl den Machern selbst nicht ganz klar ist (denn dafür müssten sie sich für ihre Arbeit INTERESSIEREN). Spätestens mit dieser Episode dürften jedwede Erwartungen auf Besserung gestorben sein. Sailor Moons "Selbstmord" zum Schluss markiert wohl auch ähnliches für Sailor Moon Crystal. Nur während Sailor Moon selbst stärker denn je wiederbelebt wird, mag Sailor Moon Crystal allerhöchstens als Zombie wiederkehren.
