Anime Weekly Review: Fall 2015 (20.11.-26.11.)

OH MY LOVE!

Or as we would be singing here in Germany: "Leb deinen Traum!"

Yep, by far the most exciting new thing this week. I – and probably a lot of other people – did not expect to see Tri before somewhere deep into next year outside Japan. It was as such a very pleasant surprise. And for what it's worth, Toei for once didn't screw up entirely. Some thoughts on it I have added below.

Okay, Tri's surprise stream wasn't all the week had to offer. There finally was the conclusion to Zoro's fight, a lot of above average episodes, one of the coolest non-Precure moments in the franchise and probably one of the cutest side harem members' bonding episodes in a long time.

Digimon Adventure Tri

First of all, it could have been a lot worse. Let's face it: After what Toei has put us through lately with SMC and even the rather unstable quality of Precure, I'm sure a lot of us have feared for what would happen to Tri. The good thing is, Tri is a rather nicely done trip down memory lane, just with the original cast all grown-up like most of their fans did (okay, not THAT grownup). That makes it a clearly fan-aimed addition... which I suppose could also be a bad thing? ^_^

But really. This first part was nothing in particular special. A lot of nice moments reminding you of when we all first watched Digimon, attention was given to all characters with a bit more focus on Taichi. And here lies perhaps the biggest hurdle to get across as a Digimon fan. Taichi's overpowering concern about whether or not he is doing the right thing feels more like an artificial reversal of the 01 situation between him and Yamato in the last arc. It's too early to say whether this is completely bad but it certainly was dragged out a bit too much and I'm sure a lot of Taichi fans may not like this twist of his character.

This first part suffered a little bit of what an anime series usually would in the first four episodes as well. It was mostly introduction to the setting, reunion interspersed with a couple of fights. Not a whole lot happened except getting these fluffy feelings whenever one of the old songs/BGMs came up.

All in all, a decent start. Not a complete screw-up and definitely more enjoyable than SMC. Then again, I was still hopeful at this point with SMC as well. ^_^ And now we have to wait almost another year... Bleh.

Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst: I have to admit, Burst IS much better off than its predecessor. There's still all the excessive and censored naughtiness but the focus is much more on the events now and as such the offending censorship does not bother this much. We even DID get a fight as promised and Mio actually won. Even if it was horribly short. I'm not sure it even qualifies as a "battle".

Fairy Tail: After several weeks on top, this episode took a bit of a breather by showing some of the other stuff going on around the important things and felt a little more like a filler. But it's not much of a bother and the resolution to the episode's title at the end was worth it. I'm kind of excited for Zero actually.

Asterisk Wars: I am SO going to ship these two. Ahem. A surprisingly perfect match has been found with Saya and Kirin and personally I'd be rooting for them more than for Ayato and Julis. Not that it will help much as we all know who will come out on top at the end but hey... My personal favorite episode so far. At this rate, Asterisk will really pull a good bit ahead of even World Break. We are pretty much past the midway point already and chances are that if a harem series has not screwed up royally at this point, it will maintain this level at least.

Valkyrie Drive: That... was a surprise. I had "him" pegged differently for sure. In hindsight it does make a lot of sense. Is it just me or are they getting less and less raunchy as the series progresses? Not sure what to make of that. By itself the series has not a whole lot appeal honestly.

One Piece: Considering how loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong (and that's the mild version) the setup and wait for this was, the conclusion was perhaps cool but rather short. I have to say, I am a tad disappointed. Just a tad. It was still a cool moment considering how utterly effortlessly Zoro took down such a towering giant in the truest sense of the world. I'd still like to see him and Erza go at it though. ^_^

Go Princess Precure: Okay, in order. At first I was going to say that Yui must be the worst example of heroine's best friend who gets constantly attacked by enemies since Naru in Sailor Moon. That was her THIRD time getting her dream locked. I can't even recall any person in Precure having it happen twice to them. BUT in light of what actually happened during the battle, I honestly think she deserves a reward. More or less active best friends without being Precure have been rare. Seji was there last season but I feel Yui has been doing a whole lot better in this regard despite having had far less screen time. I'm sure I can definitely count the number of victims fighting back like this when something was collected/locked. She nearly broke the cage ON HER OWN! Yep, I officially acknowledge Yui as being an (if not the most) awesome non-Precure friend.

Hidan no Aria AA: Heh, and they even joined forces. But, of course, the plan gets foiled before it even begins. Unfortunately it was way too obvious as to what would happen. Still, a fun episode. Next time we are finally getting back to more Akari and Aria as it seems which should have been the focus, right? We've seen way too much yuri stalker attempts so far.
