Anime Weekly Review: Fall 2015 (11.12.-17.12.)

Heading to the climax!

May the Force be with us as we head to the climax of this season..... Sorry, couldn't help myself. *looks at clock* Only fourteen more minutes as I type this and no, I am obviously not crazy enough to go night watching. My sleep cycle is prone to interruption too much already no matter how much I love Star Wars. Tomorrow afternoon for me and I may as well write my impressions in this Blog to BUT...

On with this week of anime galore. Testament is finished already which was surprising and I'm not sure it was good decision to make it only ten episodes long/short. Fairy Tail once again was absolutely glorious and everything else is heading for the finish as well. Not much else to say here.

Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst: I admit, I wasn't aware Burst would only be ten episodes. This sheds a bit more light on why the fights were so short etc. It also leaves a somewhat bitter taste with the question of: WHY? With at least two more episodes a lot of stuff wouldn't have needed to be so rushed. We could have actually had the girls show some action (and I don't mean in the bedroom ^_^) for once. It's very streamlined like this but perhaps a bit TOO streamlined. I am overall much more satisfied with Burst than the first season but Testament still falls somewhat short in execution of the plot. Which is sad in many ways.

Fairy Tail: In a word? AWESOME. Absolutely AWESOME. As per my usual routine I watched everything from Testament to One Piece Sunday evening, starting with OP and ending on Fairy Tail. OP was good... Fairy Tail was godly. Every time I think this arc has fired off all its big guns, something equally or even more spectacular happens. Rarely (never?) have I ever seen such a truly WORTHY final arc (if it is at that) to a Shounen anime/manga.

Asterisk War: I think it's official now. This season is not going to finish the tournament. We spend an entire episode preparing the semi-final which is probably going to be the closer until something happens there that totally crashes the entire tournament (which could be). Now, this episode wasn't bad, it explained quite a few things and set us up for what will probably be the climax battle of this season. It's still too bad Saya and Kirin are coming way too short in this... but what can you do with limited time? Asterisk is handling pacing much better than most of its many, many predecessors already. And geez, even Claudia seems crazy scary with her Ogre Lux.

Valkyrie Drive: Yep, I knew it was trouble. Mireille wasn't particular smart for a soldier here, unleashing that power right where everyone could see.

One Piece: Well, of course Law wasn't dead. Did anyone REALLY believe that? Of course Mingo won't be dead either. That's too simple. At least we are finally heading to a finish. As great as this arc was it has dragged on a bit too long by now.

Go Princess Precure: Why does the weakest character get the Christmas episodes? Ugh. This hasn't honestly convinced me to like Minami any more than before. That spiel about the rich girl wanting to do something else than expected of her and struggling over the decision is SOOOOOOO old, not too mention it was awfully executed here. Character development was almost zilch again since all she did was bemoan and get lectured by everyone else what she should do. How is it that the writing for two character driven mini arcs (if you want to call 2 episodes each that) is so vastly different in quality? Of course, this character was hard to salvage to begin with.

Hidan no Aria AA: Hidan no Aria AA remains the weakest link of this lineup... I mean, it's not terrible but there is really nothing much in there to really like with the plot and script so paper-thin. Here I was ready to see some awesome teamwork because, you know, Aria was just stressing the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP last episode. And what happens? Everyone gets taken out in one hit by stupidly taking the far too strong opponent on one on one only so that Akari gets to show her move at the end... And that "new enemy" showing up at the end. My dear writers, you know the term Deus ex Machina, yes? That's one. Where did she even come from?!? Ahem... Yeah, a very thin plot indeed.
